What is a perfectionist?
Well according to the American Psychological Association (APA), perfectionism is defined as ‘the tendency to demand of others or of oneself an extremely high or even flawless level of performance, in excess of what is required by the situation’.
Put in simple terms, perfectionists are people who have incredibly high standards for themselves and/or others to the point where it can negatively impact their wellbeing and productivity.
There are 3 types of perfectionists:
- Self-orientated perfectionists: you typically have very high and unrealistic standards for yourself and are self-critical
- Socially prescribed perfectionists: you believe other people are judging you to an unrealistic standard so you are hypervigilant of criticism and constantly feel like you are letting other people down
- Other-orientated perfectionists: you have very high and unrealistic standards for other people which comes across through critical and judgemental thoughts about others. For example, you refuse to delegate because you don’t trust others

What is perfectionism coaching?
A perfectionism coach is basically a trained life coach who has specialised in working with perfectionists.
In my case, I am an internationally accredited Life Coach with the IAPC&M and an accredited Project Manager with years of experience which is why I have specialised in Mindset and Productivity Coaching.
Moreover, I am a recovering perfectionist so I KNOW the struggle is real.
A perfectionist coach will work with you to identify your perfectionist tendencies, develop new ways of thinking and help you design a realistic productivity system so you can achieve your goals without burning out or procrastinating.
Coaching often takes place in a 1-1 format but there is also the option for group coaching and online courses.
How does coaching help perfectionists?
Here are a few more ways a perfectionism coach can help you improve your wellbeing and productivity.
- Identify your values: I will work with you to identify your core values so that you can break free from living a solely goals-driven life to a more holistic values-driven life. You’ll be able to figure out the things that truly matter to you, make life worth living and shed the weight of perfectionism.
- Untangle self-worth from careers/achievements: I will help you build up your self-worth and self-esteem so that they are not based on external validation. You will learn how to appreciate your internal skills, resources and value increasing your confidence overall
- Take calculated risks to get over your fear of failure: I will encourage you to take calculated risks and try new things so that you can learn and develop as a person. Over time you will develop a healthier relationship with failure
- Reframe situations and develop a growth mindset: through powerful questioning and guided visualisations, I will help you shift from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset where challenges are seen as opportunities for growth
- Develop realistic goals: I will help you notice your pattern of setting unrealistic goals and help you learn how to set SMARTER goals that empower you without making you feel overwhelmed
- Create mindful productivity systems: I will work with you to develop productivity systems and processes that are mindful and sustainable and incorporate energy management techniques. No more burning out and sacrificing your wellbeing for your goals
- Accountability and encouragement: Accountability is an ESSENTIAL element when it comes to coaching. I will check in with you, offer feedback and help you stay on track with your goals. I’ll also celebrate your wins with you and help you learn from any challenges or obstacles!
