September is the first month back to reality after a hectic summer filled with adventure and chaos. It might even feel like it’s the beginning of the end because the days start getting shorter, colder and more depressing as we approach the winter season.
This is why it is more important than ever to start this month in the right frame of mind so that you can power through the changing seasons and the colder darker days with grit and determination.
Here are some reasons why you need to use these journal prompts for hope and inspiration:
- New academic year – you need to get back into the student mindset and look for opportunities for growth and development
- Summer is nearly over – it gives you time to reflect on your summer experiences and identify any lessons learnt for next year
- Autumn and colder months – you need time to mentally prepare for the shift in the weather, routines and your energy levels. I tend to plan out my winter morning and evening routines in advance because I often struggle with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) during the colder months

Honestly, there is no secret to using journal prompts properly. You just need to stick to the basics and be honest with yourself.
- Choose a specific time each day – e.g. as part of your morning or evening routine
- Be consistent and try not to skip a day
- Create a calm, cosy environment – e.g. have a cup of tea or journal on your couch
- Be honest and open with yourself – there is absolutely no point in lying in your journal because the only person you are hurting is yourself. The truth shall set you free
- Review your journal regularly
- You can follow the order of these daily journal prompts or pick and choose depending on your mood
