FAQ
How do I use these journal prompts?
There is no right or wrong way to use journal prompts. You can pick a journal prompt each day in the order that it is listed or you can pick and choose journal prompts depending on your mood that day.
When you pick a journal prompt, spend a moment thinking about your answer and then write down whatever comes across your mind.
How do I build a daily journal habit?
Start small and be realistic.
Don’t commit to writing 1 hour a day because it is unrealistic and the task will feel overwhelming. Instead, aim to write 1 sentence a day because that is much more achievable and you will feel a sense of accomplishment.
Over time you can increase the duration/length of each journal entry. I also recommend that start by stacking your journal practice on a habit that you already do. For example, I leave my journal on my pillow so that I am prompted to write in it just before I go to bed.
Top tips
- Set a realistic goal e.g. 1 sentence a day
- Use journal prompts to help you as it reduces decision fatigue
- Stack your journaling practice on a habit you already do daily
- Pick a comfortable place to journal
- Don’t let your perfectionism win. Scribble on the first page if you have to!
What supplies do I need?
You don’t need many supplies to write in your journal. You just need a notebook and a pen. That is it!
You can invest in good quality stationery if you want such as smoother writing pens, pretty and practical notebooks and stickers but honestly, you don’t NEED it.
I personally, use a variety of different notebooks because they each have their different purposes. For example, I have:
- a Leuchtturm1917 bullet journal for keeping track of my tasks and writing a weekly/monthly review.
- a one line a day: 5 year memory book, to help me log my daily memories over a 5 year period. I started in 2022 and it is fascinating to see what I was getting up to back then.
- a diary-style journal that I use when I am writing longer entries and need to clear my thoughts. I hate to say it but it mainly contains tangents about my dating life and work struggles
- a simple business journal/ exercise book to reflect and collate all of my business ideas, thoughts, scribbles and opinions.
You DON’T need any of these things. I have them because I am EXTRA and I truly enjoy journaling. I have built up my collection over the years so it feels very easy for me to maintain all of these different books
Is typing just as effective as handwriting?
I prefer to handwrite my journal entries because it forces me to focus on the present moment and I find the mind-body connection to be incredibly helpful.
However, I am also good at touch typing so if I have a lot of racing thoughts, I find it much easier to quickly note down everything that is going on in my mind by typing it out.
You just have to find the process that works for you. Some people use Notion to help them keep track of their digital diary entries.
