38 interesting end-of-month journal prompts to realign your life
If you’re a perfectionist, then I recommend that you try using end-of-month journal prompts to help you keep on track with your productivity.
It is so easy to get swept away with all-or-nothing thinking and forget to look back on all of the things you have achieved and learnt. The only way to make sure you learn from your mistakes and make better time management choices is to reflect on your past.
As a recovered/mindful perfectionist myself, I know for a FACT my life changed for the better once I incorporated daily, weekly and monthly reflections into my routine via my bullet journal.
Also, as a Mindset and Productivity Coach, I’ve seen impressive transformations in my clients – from having unhelpful overwhelming thoughts to confidently prioritising items in their to-do list JUST from using journal prompts.
Reasons why it is important for perfectionists to use end-of-month journal prompts
You may be wondering why you should even bother doing a monthly reflection. You might even be saying: ‘Great, another thing to add to my never-ending to-do list!’. But I can promise you that it is a worthwhile task and will even help you cut out the crap from your list.
I truly believe that perfectionists NEED to have a mindful productivity system to help them balance their high standards and work ethic with self-care and values-based living.
It is the ultimate cheat sheet for high-achieving individuals!
Here are some of the main reasons why you should use these end-of-month journal prompts in your daily routine:
1. It’ll shift your perspective
We perfectionists tend to have very high standards for ourselves and can be overly critical of our own performance.
Monthly reflections provide an opportunity to step back and gain perspective on your achievements and challenges over a set timeframe. When you look back over the month, you’ll be able to see all of the things you have achieved and reflect on the progress you have made.
2. It’s an opportunity for you to learn from setbacks
If you’re a perfectionist, you may find failures and/or setbacks very hard on your self-esteem. I know a lot of people who view failures as a personal character flaw or evidence of incompetence. This fear of failure keeps people (in particular, perfectionists) stuck in a procrastination and shame spiral.
Building regular reflection using end-of-month reflections is one way to help you reframe the failure/setback as a learning opportunity and grow from it.
If you do this often enough, you’ll start to identify patterns, learn valuable lessons and develop resilience. Over time you’ll be able to channel your perfectionist tendencies into a healthy mindful productivity system – getting more done, in less time and reducing stress.
3. You’ll be able to set realistic goals
Perfectionists often set exceptionally high goals for themselves and may become discouraged if they are unable to meet them consistently.
I used to agonise over my very high goals and it would often result in me going into the all-or-nothing mental zone. So, I’d push myself working day and night to achieve my goal only to burn out weeks or months later. It was a painful cycle to keep going through but I just couldn’t figure out how to set a realistic goal for myself that didn’t seem like a cop out.
Mindful reflections give you a chance to assess whether your goals are realistic and achievable within a given timeframe. You’ll be able to check your progress periodically and amend your schedule depending on your needs and availability.
It will also allow you to measure how long certain tasks take because it is SO easy to underestimate or overestimate task duration.
4. You’ll be able to celebrate your success
It’s so easy to get caught up in focusing on the negatives in life. My perfectionist clients often obsess over the areas in life where they fall short rather than celebrating their accomplishments.
Monthly reflections provide a structured framework for acknowledging and celebrating progress no matter how small. This practice will reinforce your positive behaviours which will over time boost your self-esteem and confidence in your abilities.
Remember, it is much easier to be negative and find all the things that are wrong in life. It takes real courage to look for the positive and see all of the beauty and good in the world.
I can honestly say that celebrating my wins (no matter how small) and practising gratitude helped me to stop procrastinating and actually start doing the things I said I was going to do.
5. Your self-criticism will reduce too!
If you’re a perfectionist, you probably have a very harsh internal monologue that magnifies your mistakes and flaws. This internal critical voice thinks it is helping you by putting you down but it has the opposite effect in reality – it keeps you stuck in a self-shaming procrastination loop.
You can change the voice by doing monthly reflections that focus on kindness and self-compassion. By recognising your achievements and growth areas in a non-judgemental way, you’ll be able to cultivate self-compassion and develop a healthier relationship with yourself.
Remember, the only person you will live your entire life with is yourself so you might as well make sure that relationship is healthy!
6. Your work/life balance will improve!
Perfectionists often struggle with workaholism and/or burnout due to their relentless pursuit of perfection and all-or-nothing thinking.
Using end-of-month journal prompts can help you evaluate your work/life balance and prioritise self-care and wellbeing. By regularly assessing your habits and priorities, you’ll be able to prevent excessive stress and maintain a more sustainable lifestyle.
Common excuses for not using end-of-month journal prompts
Despite knowing the benefits of using end-of-month journal prompts for their monthly reflections. Many people will still find excuses for not doing them.
SO, I thought I would lay out all of the main reasons before you start to self-sabotage by overthinking! You’re welcome 🙂
- Fear of imperfection – I need you to remember that perfection is not the goal of reflection. It is about increasing your self-awareness and growth. Embracing imperfection in your monthly reflection can actually be a liberating experience which will help you to live a more authentic life.
- ‘I don’t have the time!’ – this is such a common reason many perfectionists tell me when it comes to monthly journaling. Reflection doesn’t have to be a time-consuming experience. Even a few minutes of journaling can help you gain greater clarity and efficiency in other areas of life. Scratch that – you don’t even need to journal if that’s not your thing, just spend some time contemplating/thinking!
- You’re unwilling to confront mistakes – making mistakes is a normal and crucial part of life that is unavoidable. The sooner you accept that you are a human being and NOT a perfect superhero, the sooner you will be able to live a happier authentic life. Reflecting on setbacks allows for learning, resilience and improvement over time
